I asked Lynsey Stone of DFW Photographer if I could publish one of her birth sessions on IMB. Lynsey is able to capture the beauty and emotional moments of a birth despite the numerous difficulties that photographing a birth presents (more or less being ready at a moment’s notice, being completely unobtrusive, and capturing the intense moments surrounding the birth).
I love looking at these photographs of this water birth taken in December of 2009 because it tells such a warm story surrounding a new life. The photograph of dad kissing mom while she seems to take a breath of air is amazing. And oh – this little one decided to show up into this world about 10 minutes after Lynsey got there – have to be on your toes!
Any others photograph births? Would love to hear your comments about birth photography!
From DFW Birth Photographer: This was a home water birth in December ’09. This family had hired midwife, Donnellyn Dominguez (http://www.allaboutbabies.net) to attend their birth and when she arrived at their home didn’t realize how fast this birth was going to take place. I luckily made it in time, but only just barely! The baby was born about 10 minutes after I got there!
Tips from DFW Birth Photographer: I think my biggest tip for someone shooting a birth would be to stay quiet and out of the way! No one wants to be tripping over the birth photographer when they are trying to provide emotional, physical or medical support to a laboring mom or baby! :-)

I have photographed a couple of births and I LOVE IT!! They are so intense and full of true emotion… they are just quite unpredictable. I actually missed a birth I was supposed to photograph yesterday, the labor was so short that not even the midwife arrived in time to catch the baby, the Dad was the lucky one.
Beautiful work by Lynsey!!

Wow, Ceci! Things don’t ever work out as planned! I’ve heard mommas have shorter labors with second births – just out of curiosity, was this the case for your client yesterday?

Yes, it was her second one as well. I had the same situation at my second birth, had a 1 1/2 labor, my photographer arrived 15 min after ;(

I have photographed five births so far – each one has been completely different, which makes it exhilarating! Lynsey is one of my biggest inspirations – I always love seeing her work!

Thanks Amanda! And yes, this does definitely seem to be the case with 2nd or subsequent births. I have missed several because they have went quickly and walked in minutes before the birth with many more! :-/

I am a labor and delivery nurse and get the opportunity to do a lot of birth photography. I love it, C-section are great because I can get the view they don’t get to see. We have started doing family centered
c-sections where mom and dad are more involved after the birth. It is great. During deliveries I always make sure someone in the room is taking the pictures and give them tips. If no one is getting the shots I grab the camera a get them for them. These pictures inspire me even more.
