We’ve been blogging for 6 months now and wanted to take a look back at some of our favorite moments of the year.

EDIT: I was going to post some more favorite posts but it turned into me thanking the people who first gave this blog a chance and I think I’m going to leave it that way.

    Happy New Year all!!!

    FEATURED SESSION BY LOT 116

We were a super new blog and I was writing to a handful of photographers who I admired hoping they would want to be featured on the site. Lot116 not only replied but sent photographs right away. We’re so thankful for Lot116 giving us a chance!

    OUR FIRST GIVEAWAY!

When I started this blog, I tried to think of ways to encourage visitors and of course, who doesn’t love giveaways? The Album Cafe gave a super new blog some great products to give away. We had 21 entries!!!

    OUR MOST EPIC GIVEAWAY!

1,035 entries for Jacqueline’s Newborn Posing Guide and I got an e-mail every time someone commented and left an entry. I was experiencing some e-mail withdrawals once the giveaway ended.

    OUR READERS

Thank you for reading this far and commenting on my inane posts sometimes! :) I’ve always had this feature on the blog, but the top commenters get a link back to their website on the right hand column of the blog which boosts your SEO. :)

    4 The Love of Focus

We celebrate your best photograph of the year today. Read through what each photographer wrote about their image and see if it resonates with you. Let’s focus on personal growth next year. We can only all get better from here. :) (Hey! That rhymes.)

** The photographs take QUITE some time to load. It took me nearly 3 hours to figure out the best way to display 120 photographs. I did not want to separate the photographs and I didn’t want to do the post in parts. :) The wait is worth it! **

Earlier this week, we featured a Winter sibling session in Arizona but the reality is that Winter is a difficult time to photograph outdoors because of the cold. MPH Photography gives us a great example of what you can accomplish by bundling up and approaching a session via a lifestyle approach combined with portraits of the family.

MPH Photography is located in Toronto, so be sure to read her tips below for photographing in the COLD.

From MPH Photography: I live in a city that gets really cold and tends to have a lot of snow and up here in Toronto. Most of us tend to hibernate during the long cold winter months. If I could combine Christmas with summer, I’d have a perfect season. Since that isn’t the case, I make the best of it and dress up with 2 pairs of pants, lots of sweaters and a coat, gloves, boots, a hat and scarf and even ear muffs. Plus, when I’m working I actually get pretty warm and toasty and at times don’t even feel the cold. That said, it’s always good to find a place to start off the session where its warm. I have photographed Amy since she was pregnant with her little one Maya and every year we try to come up with new places to shoot.  I was a bit early for the session and so we went to Starbucks and I called Amy and told her to meet us there.  I’m glad I did that because the lighting was awesome, so I decided to start shooting there. It’s great to try to get a few shots of the family members without their heavy coats on, we grabbed a hot chocolate and then we were off. We have a large Christmas tree and an ice rink downtown, and I always look for interesting lines and colourful backgrounds when shooting. It’s great for it to snow during your winter session at some point, but if not, you can always add snow later ;) as I did with a few of these images. The idea is for it to be fun, a memorable time for the family during Christmas and try to stay warm by ducking in and out of places, malls, coffee shops, cars, anywhere to warm up for a min or two.  I try to capture their spirit on film so they can look back on these images and remember how much fun they had that day. The parents wanted to do this session since last year when they saw another winter session I had done and we planned this for almost a year. In the end they couldn’t have been more thrilled and not many can say they were brave enough to face the cold but this family did and they are very happy with the results.

I was inspired to do this post from a question I posed on Facebook regarding who had a studio or aspired to have one. I saw a lot of our readers who had a 5 year plan (or less) that included opening a studio.

Other people’s goals can be an inspiration to us. It’s almost as if, “Hey, they can do it, why can’t I?” None of us are in the same place in our photography careers but we can see what we can eventually aspire to do. Since 2010 is coming to an end, it’s a perfect time to pose this question: what are your photography goals for 2011?

Leave a comment and let us know – you never know who you might inspire to reach for something more. I’ll start. :)

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

For those of us who live in areas with a mild Winter, we sometimes envy those sessions where there is some snow! But as photographers, we have no choice but to work with what we have – for example, children playing in the desert in the Winter! This session by Krista Campbell Photography was taken in Arizona in the Winter. You’ll love the black & white conversions as well as the simple portraiture from this session. In this case, less is definitely more.

From Krista Campbell Photography: I love the desert in winter here in Arizona. While other states in the US brace for winter, Arizonans are ready to play in the beautiful sunshine and enjoy the warm temperatures here in the Sonoran desert. This session was taken in an open desert and the sisters are 3 and 6. They had a great time searching for jackrabbits and picking off pieces of desert weeds that have gone to seed and blowing them like “snow”. Since this shoot was done during the golden hour, I edited them to enhance the beautiful flare and golden haze. Backlight during this time is my favorite light to shoot in. I always meter for the face and sometimes try different angles to minimize flare and haze or capture it, depending on the look I am going for.
