Inspire Me Baby

I’m sure for all of us, there gets to be a point where we run out of ideas for locations to photograph. This senior session by Kelsey Anderson Photography shows that you can find a parking lot and totally rock your session.

From Kelsey Anderson Photography:  I adore taking my clients dressed up fancy to the most random places and photographing them! I knew this young lady had the right style and when I saw a picture of her homecoming dress I knew I had to photograph her in it. Where would I take these portraits? In a parking garage of course! This is one of my all time favorite sessions. Her in her gorgeous dress in the middle of this large parking garage. The light coming in from all the openings and I usually frown upon graffiti but I adored it on this day. I hope this session will inspire you to think outside the box when it comes to locations. The cute neighborhood park is fantastic but does that location really make you giddy? This parking garage makes me giddy! Matter of fact I am taking a bride there very soon! Push the envelope. Try something new… if it doesn’t work out then at least you tried but I am willing to bet (I am in Vegas after all) that you will find that you adore shooting at these locations that aren’t the norm.

You can’t beat this ADORABLE expression on this one year old taken by Nina and Cecilia. Sometimes the best photographs are the ones that are unplanned – and cake smashes always provide such great moments. Nina and Cecilia offer some advice about her cake smashes below – remember to ask about allergies!

To see more from this session, please visit the session on their blog.

From Nina and Cecilia: For our one year sessions, we provide a birthday cake for our little clients!  When we first started our business, we would make the cake ourselves, but as photographers, we all know that time is valuable!  We could be spending more time with our kids or editing pictures rather than baking a cake.  ;-)  Why make it when you can buy it for a decent price?  We buy most of our cakes at our local grocery stores like Wal-Mart, Hy-Vee, Kroger’s, etc.  In the bakery section of these stores, they have kid sized cakes already pre-made which cost around $5-$10.  On the day of our photo session, we just head over to one of our local grocery stores and buy one!  Now that was easy and affordable!

If you know what stage of development the baby you are photographing is in, you can plan ahead what photographs you can and cannot take and what props you should bring. When I’m photographing any child under one, I always ask the parents what is the latest developmental milestone the baby has reached. This really helps me think about my shots and whether or not I need to plan for chasing a kid around. Here are some baby milestones – remember that all babies develop at their own pace and may or may not have reached the standard milestone so be sure to ask the parents!

    Newborns

We’ve had a few tips on photographing newborns already. All of the tips for handling and photographing newborns basically simulate their time in the womb: white noise, being swaddled, and warmth. When all else fails, feed, feed, feed. Newborns will typically sleep between 14-18 hours a day for about 2-4 hours at a time, so plan for a lot of sleeping photographs. Of course, we all seem to get those newborns that NEVER sleep while we’re there. From what I remember, they pee and poop A LOT, so plan to be able to clean up easily if you’re photographing them without their diapers on.

Plan for a lot of sleeping and cuddling photographs.

    3-4 Months

Around this age, they can raise their heads while being on their tummies. However, I’ve found depending on the personality of the baby, they’ll either tolerate it or hate it and scream. You can introduce photographs of babies while on their bellies, but some sneaky ones also like to roll over. So, you have to be fast.

At this age, babies can grasp and shake toys. What props can you bring that a 3 month old can hold?

    6 Months

A 6 month baby is my favorite age to photograph! Stranger anxiety has not set in and most can sit up on their own. So, not only will you get a lot of smiles if you’re able to amuse them, but being able to sit up opens a whole new world of ideas and props. You can sit them in all sorts of props without them toppling over.

A 6 month old will be able to bear their weight on their own legs when in a standing position, so if parents are able to support the baby standing up, this will also open up a variety of poses.

Teething may start around now as well, so you might have a teething baby to deal with.

    9 Months to 1 Year

This is around the age that they’ll start learning how to walk. You can plan for them to be able to hold onto something and be able to stand up. If they’re not ALREADY walking, they’re crawling or cruising. If they ARE walking, expect to chase after them. Don’t expect a 1 year old to stay still for too long.

Stranger anxiety may or may not be present so be sure to ask the parents beforehand so you can change the way you need to approach the baby.

As of late, I’ve been posting about ways you can give back to the community: here and here. Jewels Photography posted on her blog that she was giving away a free session. All you had to do was to nominate someone and tell Jewels Photography why you admired them. The winner ended up being these two sisters. Be sure to read their e-mail to Jewels Photography below.

From Jewels Photography: I wanted to do something special for someone as my way of giving back. I posted on my blog and fb for someone to nominate someone that is special to them in their life and who they admire and the reason why. They were to email their picks and then I would choose the winner. I opened up this email and can still not read thru it without crying. I ended up picking these amazing women. Erin for the beautiful email and her sister Shannon for being the strong beautiful women that she is. In the end I was the one that ended up being blessed. The MUA came and did their make up and we had a blast shooting.

    Here is the e-mail:

My sister Shannon has been the most inspirational person ever to grace my life and as I begin to write this line I have tears swelling my eyes. Every day I think about her struggle, where she began and where she is today, I also think about her future and how she will cope 5 years from now or 30. Shannon’s 2 year old son was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2006. It was a frightening time to say the least. But we were all filled with hope that he would beat it. There was nothing more we could be. Shannon lived the next 3 years in and out of the children’s hospital with Anthony. She was a single mom, raising 2 young boys. She lost everything tangible, but it was all worth it to be by Anthony’s side during this helpless time. Her life was turned upside down, filled with constant worry that something would go wrong. Dealing with the side effects of chemo, the needles, the medications, the blood transfusions, the spinal taps, the hair loss, the bruises, the weakness, the sadness, the loneliness of being a little boy stuck in a hospital room during Halloween or Christmas. It all just didn’t seem fair. Yet Shannon was so strong. She was so positive. She became a mecca of knowledge about the disease. She inspired people everywhere. But to our surprise, our sweet little Anthony became sicker. At 5 years old, he succumbed to the cancer. It was a devastating blow that words can never describe. I’m not sure it will ever make sense. 2010 was the most terrible year of our lives. But Shannon kept on. She went back to work, started saving money to buy a house, and continued raising her other sweet 8 year old son with grace and love. During all of this heartache, she did reconnect with a man who she went to high school with. They fell in love and he stuck by her through the darkest days. Now Shannon is expecting a baby boy. They both couldn’t be more thrilled. Although nothing will ever come close to filling the empty space in Shannon’s heart, she is beyond thrilled about the new miracle in her life. Every day is a challenge for us and especially for Shannon. Getting through the holidays was difficult. Answering her son’s questions about Anthony and hearing him cry every night is painful. I don’t know how she does it and I can’t imagine how she must feel each and every day. But I know that she is awesome and strong and an inspiration to many. Whenever I feel sad or bummed about something, I think of all that she has gone through and I know that I have it easy compared to what she has overcome. I am very lucky to have Shannon as my sister, her and Anthony have both touched my life in the deepest way and have made me see the world in a different light.

We’re doing our giveaway a little differently this week. Damien Symonds, our Photoshop guru is giving away to 3 people his course to his Introduction to Adjustment Layers and Masks in PS and Elements!

If you need help with the below, this will be the class for you.

    From Damien:

Introduction to Adjustment Layers and Masks in Photoshop and Elements

Layers and masks are at the heart of everything that Photoshop can do.  Once you grasp them, everything else becomes a zillion times easier.

You’ve probably seen advice on forums like “do such-and-such and mask it back”.  Or encountered a tutorial which instructs you to “make a such-and-such layer and adjust such-and-such”.  The fact is, the internet is overflowing with great Photoshop resources to rock your editing world.  But if you lack that all-important core understanding of layers and masks, you’ll find you can’t take advantage of all the advice and tutorials you find.

I’ve written a short course for beginners, to teach you the basics of those layers and their masks.  It’s an online slideshow presentation, with plenty of illustrations and screenshots.  The slides are brief and snappy, and easy to understand.  PLUS there are accompanying videos to watch; and best of all, it has complete question-and-answer interaction.  If you don’t understand something, or would like further information or clarification, just type your question right there beneath the slide, and I’ll immediately answer it next time I’m at my computer.

This is for people with both Photoshop AND Photoshop Elements.  Too many people think that Elements is a substandard program, lacking the powerful functionality of Photoshop.  I hasten to dispel this myth – Elements is an enormously powerful program, possessing much of the same important layer and mask ability as its big brother.  This course will empower Elements users to their fullest.

The price of this course is a mere $20, but until the end of February, IMB readers can have it for half price – just ten dollars!  And if you don’t feel like you got your ten dollars’ worth, I’ll refund your money without hesitation.

PLUS … Just for Inspire Me Baby, I’m giving away three courses for nothing!  The first, fifth and tenth IMB readers to sign up will get the course absolutely free.

To enquire or sign up, just send me a message on Facebook – http://www.facebook.com/damien.symonds – and mention this blog to claim your half price access.  And if you’re the 1st, 5th or 10th to sign up … it’s FREE!

I look forward to broadening your post-processing horizons.

Damien is a retoucher and restorer from Brisbane, Australia.  He is an active participant on many photography forums, and runs various online Photoshop training courses.  You can see some of his work, and his tutorials, on his site and his blog.
