Inspire: Sibling Session by Chrissie Marie Photography

While looking at Chrissie Marie Photography‘s blog, I saw this session of her own children that I loved. When we first featured a session with this prop, a lot of you said how much you loved it – well here it is again and I still want it (IMB is not affiliated with Pepperlu – just love their stuff)! :) Chrissie Marie shares in detail how she styles her sessions and where she purchased her props so be sure to read below. I’ve never thought of looking at interior design and style magazines for inspiration!

Thanks Chrissie for sharing!

From Chrissie Marie Photography: My name is Christina and I am a full-time Mommy of 2 and also a baby and child photographer located in Minneapolis, MN. I specialize in newborn, baby & child contemporary photography.

Although I am a baby & child photographer I am no expert when it comes to photographing my own children so when Inspire Me Baby wanted to feature my session with my kids & talk about how I style a session & shop for props I had to reply… it’s okay these are my kids right?!

Taylor is 5 and Addison is 2 and they drive me crazy when they won’t sit together for an image but I still love setting up the images. Why is that I have less patience with my own kids & taking their pictures than when I photograph others children?! I have a huge love for interior design and I like to bring that into my sessions. Before a session I usually have a look I want. I do know that although I like designing and styling my sessions, it’s all about the child when they get in front of the camera. It’s my job to get to know them, to engage them and to help tell a story with my images. Some of my favorite images a child is not even looking at the camera.

I am always shopping. I love the vintage feel timeless feel. I love the right props: ottomans, old trunks, crates, boxes, fainting couches, dark rich woods, and fabrics with texture. I like to go through interior design and style magazines and see how I can bring design into my sessions. I hit trunk and antique stores, fabric and craft stores and lots of furniture/home accessory stores. I actually find a lot of my blankets and bowls at Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware. My Mom lives in Southern Georgia and loves antiques so she is always on the look out for me. Also, my sister in-law is an interior designer so I have a great in the design world and love getting new things for my studio. For backdrops I like using fuzzy fabric, rich woods & also a big fan of Photo-Props & Backdrops and also Lemondrop-Stops Backdrops to give the feel of wallpaper/texture. For outdoors I like to find more urban areas/brick or old wood or if a client wants the green grass/summer or fall look I find areas with lots of color and texture. Tall grasses, colorful trees. Putting furniture outside is always fun too!

For girls clothes I am a sucker for girly boutiques & Matilda Jane. I do also hit your big box stores (Gap, Gymboree, Macy’s Sak’s) and love finding outfits with a dressier/vintage feel. I like pairing fancier dresses with trendy boots. I like hats and headbands on girls. I like simple headbands to bigger flower/fancier headbands with the right outfit. For boys I like layers. Hats, blazers with untucked dressed shirts or dress shirt with t-shirt over. Faded jeans are my favorite for boys right now.

Where to find

Ottomans: Pepperlu

Addison’s outfit: Matilda Jane & headband from WhippyCake.
