Now for something a little different: a commercial session by Danielle Nicole Photography taken in China. The things that stand out from this session is not only the styling of the children (which of course is super cute) but also the fact that she shot in the middle of the afternoon.
How many of us photographers are forced to shoot in the mid-day sun and are able to do it well? Danielle’s secret? Some assistants using reflectors to eliminate the harsh shadows on the face.
You’ll also love the colors from this session which is a little different than the softer colors that are popular in post-processing right now.
From Danielle Nicole Photography: This session was shot in Hangzhou (hong-joe), China at a place called Ba Gua Tian (bah-gwah-teeyan). This place looked like it was straight from a movie with beautiful mountain scenery as the backdrop, tons of greenery and brick stones, and it was just the right time of year when all of the flowers were blooming. This was a styled commercial shoot for a photography studio here in Hangzhou, and the models were soo stinking adorable. The little girl was around 5 years old, and the little boy was around 6 years old. There were a few challenges while doing this photo session, however the images turned out beautifully regardless! We were forced to shoot the session at the time of day when the sun was the brightest (due to avoid traffic of navigating the city of 8 million people!) We thankfully had some lovely assistant’s use reflectors in order to eliminate harsh shadows on their cute little faces!
Tips for Kids Sessions:
- An important tip when photographing 5 – 6 year olds is to keep them happy! Make them laugh, distract them with props, and sometimes even a little bribe will just do the trick (of course makes sure if it is a candy bribe that it is okay with the parents first)! A happy child makes a conducive atmosphere for amazing portraits! Sometimes crying/pouting photos are cute, but an entire session of photos of an unhappy kid is never a good thing!
- Another thing to remember when photographing little ones is to make sure you wear comfortable clothes and a pair tennis shoes. I find that every time I have a child session, I am running, squatting, and half the time chasing them. It sure does make for a good workout!
- Don’t be afraid to be silly. If you are relaxed and comfortable, the child will also be relaxed and comfortable!
