Inspire Me Baby

  • For the custom photography consumer, it’s very important to get a sense of the energy, passion and dedication to detail of the photographer. Given the responsibility of capturing a significant moment such as a wedding or maternity session, clients often look for a special relationship with their photographer. We love hearing about sessions that are the multi-sequential points in the life of a couple then a family. It reflects both a sense of trust and investment that the client has in your work when they return to you again and again. Nina and Cecilia {creative spark} share a such a session below. Be sure to leave some feedback for them !

  • This session from Deanna Mushins of  D Images is a classic example of the shots you want to get when photographing newborn twins, including close-ups that focus on features, full body compositions emphasizing the unique duality relationship and the cocoon swaddle. Deanna incorporates different textures and colors that work beautifully against the delicate skin tones of these twins. She also creates a sense of interaction between the babies just by the way she  has positioned their hands and heads. We welcome your feedback below, and be sure to visit Dimages.com.au for more inspiration.

The Divine Double: Photographing newborns is my favourite thing in the world to do! It is extremely challenging and you would think after a while it would get easier but I always have that feeling of just never knowing what the day/session will bring!

These twins little boys “Marcus and Joshua” were just ideal subjects born at 37weeks they were 13 days old at the session I was very very lucky! With twins you have to work extra hard to get them both posed correctly in a short space of time because there seem to wake at different times and that limits you to maybe 20 minutes in a 3-4hours session sometimes!

One thing I remember take with me was my “noise maker” featuring sounds of the womb, I find it always helps and i think it did especially with this session!

  • Call it macro photography or close-ups, when a baby is only a few days or weeks old, there is but a brief time to capture the details of their flaky skin, downy hair and paper thin finger and toe nails. Newborn babies change and grow so much in a matter of weeks. This session from Schaap Studios captures these moments beautifully and I hope it inspires you  to record the details in all of your sessions — from newborns to seniors alike!

    Message from Schaap Studios:

Baby Greyden was a very good client! He slept through the entire session and no matter how we maneuvered him, he never made a peep. Greyden was 3 weeks old when I shot him but being 4 weeks early, his size and temperament made for a great subject. His entire family came along to watch him be photographed and they were just as lovely as he was. We started in studio with the latest drop it MODERN backdrop called Greydient, perfect right?! The pewter stump was the ultimate prop for this setting. We then went into a near by corn field and displayed him in the most fabulous wood basket. The lighting was dreamy! This session was a breeze and I couldn’t be happier with the photos.

  • Here is a lovely natural light, in-studio session from  Nicole Ramsay Photography. This session includes the classic newborn shots, a few with big brother, and simple, bright family portraits.  Shooting against a clean white background makes sense not only in terms of composition but also as a representation of the starting point of a family’s journey together. Nicole offers newborn photography workshops so if you are in Brisbane, Queensland grab the opportunity to study with her.

When reviewing submissions, I almost always visit the website or blog of the photographer. In Nicole’s case, I was particularly struck with the About Me category of her blog and how she integrates her life into her professional representation. I think it is smart and advantageous to her business on many levels.  First, it provides prospective clients an immediate sense of the person behind the business.  Secondly, it enables the photographer to share her passion, her awards, sense of humor, a bit of her family life, etc. creating a sense of relatedness and trust. As consumers we’re drawn to businesses and services providers with whom we can identify and I think Nicole does an excellent job of sharing that goes beyond a paragraph or two. Finally, Nicole’s writing is great fodder for long-tail keywords and an important part of search engine optimization.  Be sure to stop by her blog, Facebook page, and please leave your comments and feedback below.

Charley: I say it every time but it is no lie. Every new little soul I meet is so untouched, exciting and beautiful. They are all uniquely different but they are all they same – they are loved beyond comprehension. It’s compelling to be around and part of the reason I love shooting newborns. The room is filled with a sense of calm, nervousness and happiness all at the same time. It is truly an amazing experience.

    Baby: 7 days
    Big Brother: 21 months
    Shot in studio, natural light
    Session duration: 4 hours
    Shot using Canon 5d MkII, 50mm 1.2L and 24-70mm 2.8L (between f1.6 and 2.8)

  • Here is a charming session from Jessica V Photography, storytelling this newborn’s emergence both figuratively and literally. With some props and concepts you just have to wait for the right client. As demonstrated here, that patience is rewarded with a one-of-a-kind expression. Images within a themed session can work well both as individual portraits as well as a series in a photobook, wall display or album. Please be sure to leave your feedback for Jessica in the comments below.

    The Hungry Caterpillar

This is a favorite book from my childhood and for my children.  I gathered all the props and setups for this newborn session, and waited patiently for a family who would be just as excited about it as I was.  As always in sling shots and baby poses, it’s extremely important to understand safety in newborn shoots, including how to do composite shots, and to make use of that lovely clone stamp in Photoshop for final products! I am excited to see this “Story” on the nursery wall when the canvas gallery comes in, as well as the custom album.
