Who was your original inspiration when you started your business? Who inspires you now?
I guess I’d have to say Beth Jansen. I was extremely drawn to her use of color, texture etc.  Although my style is nothing like hers now – there was something that intensely drew my eye to her work.  I’ve also always been a fan of the clean look of Andie Hamilton - an amazing local photog in dallas that i’ve had the opportunity to work with and more importantly become friends with.  She’s tremendous and has a great eye for portraits and a great mind for business.

Currently, I’d have to say that I’m inspired by some of the following artists most are polar opposite from what I do but that’s why I can appreciate them – Stephanie Piscitelli with Bellini Portraits (love her clean playful imagery); Deb Schwedhelm (adore her raw honest view from behind the lens) ; Ann He (a young artist in Dallas – simply amazing); Brooke Shaden (wow – her vision for each shot blows me away everytime.  her ability to create something in her mind and then excecute it flawlessly is amazing – on top of that they are self portraits!  i genuinely appreciate her process); Stephanie Rausser - really does that need any explanation??  I could keep going as there are bits and pieces of so many artists that i love.

What was the hardest part of starting your own business? What do you wish you would have known?
Time management for sure!  Balancing it all is still difficult for me – i’m in awe of those people that can do this and have a family.  Secondly I had a hard time being ME – it’s so easy in the beginning to want to be like all the people you admire.  What do I wish I would have known -??  Well that it’s a lot harder than it looks.  Owning your own business, being an artist and a business person, having the backbone to know who you are and not apologize for it, stick to your guns, price without apology, really LOOK at life through the camera – don’t just take a photo. so so so much – but you simply learn that as you go along.

Tell us about your favorite lens and why it is #1 in your camera bag over your other lenses
Well I only have 3 – so I allow myself to love them all.  (All Nikkor: 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4 )  Right now – I’m LOVING my 35mm.  I really enjoy being super close to my subject – especially smaller kids so it allows me that luxury with still a bit of room and shooting at 1.4 with it is amazing when i nail it.

Who was your original inspiration when you started your business? Who inspires you now?

Would it be cliché to say my son? On a deeper personal note, it was probably the need to be creative and be a business owner, something I have always loved and has the passion to do.  My husband really encouraged me to find myself and begin my business.  Now my inspiration comes from all sorts of things, still my son and husband of course, but everything from soft, neutral colors, pretty textures, vintage/antique shops, emotional moments between people, new babies, etc.

Who was your original inspiration when you started your business? Who inspires you now?
Andrea Murphy (www.amurphyphoto.com) is and was one of my biggest inspirations.  I second shoot weddings for her and not only is she a wonderful photographer but she’s also a fantastic business woman.  She’s always generous with her knowledge and encourages me in business.  Other photographers I love are Jerry Ghionis, Bobbi + Mike, Elizabeth Messina, pretty much all the photographers in CMpro, and so many others.

What was the hardest part of starting your own business? What do you wish you would have known?
Pricing.  I spent so much time stressing over pricing only to realize a year later that I was charging way too little.  I wish I had asked someone for guidance with my pricing and held off on business for another year or two so that I could better develop my skills.

Tell us about your favorite lens and why it is #1 in your camera bag over your other lenses.
The Canon 100L is my absolute favorite lens.  Not only is it a great macro lens but it’s also beautiful for portraits.  The quality, color, and contrast is superior to many of the other L lenses I’ve used.  It doesn’t get near the praise it deserves.

Please welcome Dallas area photographer, Angela Weedon.  Angela and her husband Matt have been photographing the families of Dallas, TX since 2000. Angela provides amazing insight and advice in this Photographers Who Inspire interview.  Be sure to check out her website and beautiful studio located right next door to their home!

Who was your original inspiration when you started your business? Who inspires you now?
Honestly when we started, there weren’t too many other people doing what we do. Matt and I had just returned back to the states after living overseas — we worked as scuba instructors and dive crew on a live-aboard dive boat in the Pacific, and we supplemented our income with underwater stock photography. We had tons of photo equipment that needed to be put to work! I began taking photos of my nephew and friends’ kids. After taking dark room classes at a community college, I knew I wanted to specialize in black and white fine art photography. In addition to our small client base at the time, I shot for Christine Meeker, a photographer out of Houston, as her Dallas base. She and her husband Mark have a wonderful business, and they priced their work very well. I learned so much from them (and was very inspired by them) in that year. I think right now who inspires me most are Bobbi and Mike, out of Indianapolis. We had our family photographed by them last year. With each blog post I see from them, I am amazed at the emotion and FUN they bring out of their subjects. I really think the rapport and ease a subject has with the photographer makes or breaks an image. Of course, I am also very inspired by Barb Uil….who isn’t? ;)

What was the hardest part of starting your own business? What do you wish you would have known?
The hardest part of starting our business was figuring out that I couldn’t do it all on my own! In the beginning, I was answering the phone, doing the shoots solo, doing the sales, printing everything in the dark room myself, etc. Well that lasted about 3 months. I think I had a total of 5 hours of sleep that whole time. Matt was still marketing his travel photography to magazines and books when I asked him if he could answer the phone and start assisting me at the shoots to change the film and hold the reflector. Well that quickly morphed into him running the entire business, being the most amazing photo assistant/ kid wrangler in history, and having such a great relationship with our clients that we joke he is the most popular therapist in Dallas. These moms tell him everything! ;) Matt had always had is own business. He went to his first tax preparation seminar at age 12 for his lawn business he owned for 10 years! I am a firm believer that if you want your business to actually be successful, it must be run with someone with a business mind. I really don’t have that, so we make a great team.

Prepare to be inspired!  No props, no poses …just  the authentic  beauty in the simplest and purest of forms. Inspire Me Baby is excited to give you a glimpse into the quiet brilliance of Meg Bitton Photography.

Who was your original inspiration when you started your business? Who inspires you now?
My first daughter was my original inspiration and continues to be my greatest source of inspiration, followed by my sons. Watching them grow and learn and change everyday has to be the most amazing thing I have ever experienced and to be able to document it is a gift beyond comprehension.

What was the hardest part of starting your own business? What do you wish you would have known?
I guess learning to show people that no one can do what I do was the hardest thing for me. Making people understand that every photographer has a special something to offer, and my potential clients want MINE. I wish I had known when I started that there is no finish line, that this journey is ever evolving.
